Our Biggest Screening Drive Yet: 228 Ultrasounds in 3 Days at Murray House

This Dragon Boat Festival weekend, Phenomenally Group set up at the historic Murray House in Stanley — and delivered our biggest health screening camp to date, in our shortest time frame yet.
From 19–21 June, alongside the 50th Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, we ran free ultrasound screenings open to everyone in Hong Kong. No referral. No cost. Just a ten-minute appointment covering breast, thyroid, upper and lower abdomen, prostate and testicular health.

The result: 228 ultrasounds completed in 3 days — our highest number yet for a single weekend camp.

Fully booked, and still room for more
Our slots were fully booked ahead of the weekend — but Murray House sitting right in the middle of the Dragon Boat action meant we welcomed a steady stream of walk-ins too: festival spectators, racers between heats, and residents from the surrounding area who simply saw us and stopped by.

Who showed up
This weekend was about more than numbers. We welcomed cancer survivors. We welcomed advocates. We welcomed entire families — wives bringing husbands, men bringing friends, generations showing up together. With June marking Men's Health Month, seeing so many men come through — many encouraged by the women in their lives — made this weekend feel especially powerful.

We also welcomed people from across Hong Kong's districts. One person travelled all the way from Tai O to Stanley for their appointment — opposite ends of the city, all to get checked.

Why this matters
Hong Kong's cancer numbers are sobering, and they're rising. Between 2004 and 2023, annual cancer diagnoses in Hong Kong climbed 68 per cent, from 22,525 to 37,953 — meaning about 104 people were told they had cancer every single day in 2023. Cancer remains the city's leading cause of death, claiming nearly 15,000 lives in 2023 alone — more than a quarter of all deaths that year. (Source: SCMP)

The good news: while case numbers have more than doubled since modern tracking began in 1983, the risk of dying from cancer has nearly halved over the same period, thanks to better treatment and earlier detection. But experts are clear that Hong Kong must invest more in prevention and screening to keep leading on cancer outcomes — which is exactly the gap weekends like this one are designed to close.
